Rare Shark in Photos

These photos were on a site which was not loading well and gave me a malware warning.

A rare prehistoric shark was discovered by local residents in Shizuoka, southwest of  Tokyo. The huge eel-like creature, considered to be a living fossil, was taken to Japan’s Awashima Marine Park and placed in a seawater pool. Only just a few hours after it was moved, the unusual shark died.rarefossil01_resize rarefossil02_resize rarefossil03_resize rarefossil04_resize

Folk Art Dolls

Kokeshi (??? kokeshi?), are Japanese dolls, originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist.

via the possibilities are endless: week of folk art dolls, assorted.

Harajuku Girls Style

My Mom bought a purse with these little Japanese girls on it. It was on the sale rack in Florida but I thought the drawings were cute and looked up the name on the purse. Found a lot of drawings and a whole fashion style called Harajuku.

Find more photos and information on Harajuku Style, WikiHow has a post about How to Dress Harajuku Style, there are photos on Japan Forum, Mooky Chick has a Harajuku Fashion Guide, on Flickr there is a collection of photos: Harajuku Girls are the New Geishas.

The illustration with this post came from Spoiled Brat’s blog.
