Are Women Really Sex Objects?

Found on the web:

Are Women Really Sex Objects?

Don’t mean to start a big fight on this fine Sunday morning – but here I go anyway.

When you really think about it, I mean really think about it, aren’t women really sex objects. We try to say they aren’t soooooooo much but, at the end of the day, when all is said and done, women are nevertheless seen as sex objects. We try to hide it as much as we can but don’t we still really believe it anyway?

Of course women are not just sex objects. I feel that we have fooled ourselves into seeing men and women as equals. Women see themselves as objects of sex appeal and guys see every girl as a potential ‘fun night’ – or more – no matter what they say.

Why do women get breast implants? To have better posture? Why do women apply makeup? For sun protection? Why do women spend time and money improving their looks – at the expense of time devoted to enhancing skills and building experience? Because it is fun obsessing over looks?

Maybe you’d say “yeah, you’re right, but the point is that it is wrong and we have to strive to correct the situation.” To that I would reply with this – why spend so much time and energy fighting against our instinct? Against our nature? Look at what amazing things can happen when we go with our instincts – we get to the moon. Look what happens when we fight our instincts – we get a war on drugs that costs money and doesn’t fight drugs.

Why not admit that women are seen primarily in terms of their sex appeal and embrace the truth. It will set you free – and hopefully set them free of their clothes!

What do you think?

First of all, this is assuming all women fit this stereotype. All women wear cosmetics, get bigger boobs, and apparently we don’t get old (or too old) either.

Secondly, there is the idea that cosmetics and etc. are all about changing or creating an appearance on the outside. Yes, of course, that is part of it. But, most women I know like to feel they are looking good. (I don’t think that’s just a woman thing, or a sex thing, or a gender thing).

Do women (or people in general) want to look good in order to be sex objects? Some likely do. I’m sure it’s not 100% however.

This brings up the question… Are men really sex objects? Which makes me think about what makes a person a sex object in the eyes of the beholder? We all have our own view of what is sexy.

Also, last of all, a sex object seems like an inanimate object, something you can pick up, use and discard. I don’t think we should be looking at anyone that way. In the end, it’s the reason I don’t think men or women are sex objects. But, some day there will be sex robots and those will be objects, animated in a mechanical way but still not human. (At least not for at least a generation or three).

Which Ancient Religion Does Your Spirit Belong To?

Capture

Exotic and Bold, your spiritual connection to patterns aligns you most with the Egyptian ways of religion. With a spiritual mindset that wavers between monotheistic and polytheistic, your spirituality is more about grasping the patterns, mechanics, and meaning of life in broad scope – rather than adhering to any specific ideals. For you, great importance is placed upon the quality of this journey – this life – and what it will lead to for the afterlife and beyond.

“The Egyptians saw time in the present as a series of recurring patterns, whereas the earliest periods of time were linear. Myths are set in these earliest times, and myth sets the pattern for the cycles of the present. Present events repeat the events of myth, and in doing so renew maat, the fundamental order of the universe. Amongst the most important episodes from the mythic past are the creation myths, in which the gods form the universe out of primordial chaos; the stories of the reign of the sun god Ra upon the earth; and the Osiris myth, concerning the struggles of the gods Osiris, Isis, and Horus against the disruptive god Set.” – Egyptian Mythology via Wikipedia

I Wish you Enough

My Mother posted this to my nephew on Facebook (she reposted from who knows who or where):

Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter’s departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said: “I love you and I wish you enough.”

The daughter replied, “Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.” They kissed and the daughter left.

The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?”

“Yes, I have,” I replied. “Forgive me for asking but why is this a forever good-bye?”

“I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is the next trip back will be for my funeral,” she said.

When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, “I wish you enough.” May I ask what that means?”

She began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. “When we said ‘I wish you enough’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them”.

Then turning toward me, she shared the following, reciting it from memory, “I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.” She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person. An hour to appreciate them. A day to love them. And an entire life to forget them.

My Favourite Teacups

Gorgeous teacupsThese shiny gold/ orange firey teacups are my favourites. My Mother and I collect them. We have three full sets (cup and saucer) with this pattern. One is more worn and always makes me feel a little sad. Poor old thing.

This photograph comes from a set for sale on Etsy. I love the photo. It’s hard to take a photo of the glow from the finish/ glaze on the teacups.

We only use these cups and saucers about once a year. Other than that they are kept on a shelf which has a glass door so we can see them. Unlike silver they don’t tarnish so you can leave them out to be seen without having to worry about it. (Silver tarnishes faster when it is exposed to air and sunlight). I guess these cups would eventually fade if they were in full sun, but they are safe in their little corner of the kitchen.

It’s nice having a few special things. I think we tend to gather and collect and keep too much nowadays, myself included. I have far more non-fiction books than I will ever read (unless I discover immortality – even then I’d have to not age while I’m busy being immortal).

Altared Naturally

Originally written for The Crying Clown Zine (c. 1998)

Just picture yourself, in mid ritual, suddenly your Book of Shadows falls to the floor with an unpleasant sounding thud. Silly you, you forgot your altar!

The Wiccan/ Pagan altar is not just for eating your breakfast on anymore. Also, those looking forward to virgin sacrifices are in for a disappointment. But, look on the bright side, now you don’t have to save yourself for that big moment on the stone slab, just go out and have fun!

So, what should you know about constructing your very own altar? Start with all natural ingredients and assemble them inside a circle. Those are the basics. Your altar can be outdoors for all the little bugs and squirrels to see or it can be inside and easily pushed under your bed for those with parents who like to make room inspections still. An altar can even be made on your desk at work. Just use some creativity and no one will suspect you have brought Pagan influences to concrete jungle.

The altar itself can have a circular base or square, depending on how natural you want to go with it. Outdoors, a fire can substitute for an altar. Make sure you are prepared to safely extinguish it before you leave. Face your altar in a direction of power, generally that’s north, the direction associated with Earth. Some Wiccan use east and west, the direction the sun rises and sets. Lastly, everything on your altar is positioned in a pattern. The arrangement is very individual and can be kept track of in your Book of Shadows. (The Book of Shadows is a book or some other form of note keeping Wiccan use for their exploration and discoveries along their path of learning.)

Just raring to go and get Medieval, I mean creative? To dedicate your altar to the Goddess and God, something you can choose to do. Set up put the tools dedicated to the Goddess (pentacle, cup, bell, crystal, cauldron and others) on the left side of the altar. The tools dedicated to the God (athame, censer, white handled knife, etc) are placed on the right side. In the middle of the altar, you please yourself; at least that is how I see it.

If you don’t follow the ‘standard’ altar plan with God and Goddess on either ends you can fill those areas of your altar with things to represent the elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The idea is to stick to natural ingredients but you can do a lot with those. A natural altar contains assorted leaves, stones, drawings/ pictures, candles, seashells, feathers, flowers/ herbs, a glass of water, your pet guppy, tissues (handy if you have a cold) and a pirate’s treasure map (assuming you can find one). Keep in mind the elements. The feather and leaves can represent Air. The candle and maybe some burnt offerings from breakfast can represent Fire. Water is easy with seashells or a glass of water. Earth can be represented by the stones or leaves (think compost, just don’t put it on your altar unless you are ready for the smell).

The altar is the physical centre of a ritual. Its a place of power and magick. To think it is mostly a flat surface to work at is a mistake. Some of your energy and magick will remain in your altar after each ritual. You will be bringing a lot from yourself to the ritual and your altar. Because of this, your altar must have special meaning to you. Use your own sense of style, things that are important, have meaning to you, and design your altar to suit yourself and your needs.

Under the Clouds

I hadn’t really looked at the clouds in years. I’d been busy. I’d been frustrated and I’d been indoors. This had been his idea, getting back to nature he’d said. Camping didn’t seem like a good idea to me. I like running water!

But, here I am. In the middle of nowhere, in a woodsy area. Quiet. Lying on a blanket, sunbathing for the first time in years. The clouds float far over my head. The sky so blue in between. If this were a horror story I’d be in big trouble right about now. It’s always the girls who have sex that die. The little virgins live on to film again.

The first orgasm had been nice, like a quick kiss. He still knelt between my thighs. His hands on me, lightly skimming touches over my the skin of my thighs, my belly and up to my breasts. Obediently waiting for me to tell him to kiss me or make love to me again.

The stress headache I’d carried around like an ogre on my back is gone. Instead I feel lighter and the back of my neck doesn’t creak. I am content to just lie here, feeling sun warm my skin. Puffy white cotton balls slowly coast through the sky. Right now it’s just me and those clouds. Hmm… that one looks like a dragon.

This time Wank Wednesday is all about the clouds.

Sparkle Through Christmas

Rhinestone necklace for extra sparkle this season.
If you feel a bit tired after Christmas shopping, Christmas baking and cooking and Christmas cleaning and planning… bring some sparkle back to yourself. Wear this. Then have a nap and wake up wearing this. It’s the best sparkling thing I found today. When not wearing it I’d like to have it as a sun catcher over the kitchen window. How could you not feel the Christmas spirit with all this sparkle, glitter and dazzle so close to you?

Unusual Page on Today.com

I was looking at Today.com, thinking about trying it as a writer. I wanted to find some kind of directory of blogs (by topic preferably) on the network. Instead I found a girl licking the butt of another girl. Not quite what I expected to find. See the screen capture below. Maybe someone hacked into their site and they have not found it yet. I sent a note, giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, I think I will hold off on joining for now.

Update: They fixed it sometime during the day today. Someone on the support staff emailed me back and said they were going to fix it right away. So, it must have been hacked. But, how long was it up there? Funny that a page on such a big site could be hacked, unnoticed.

Addendum: Seems this has been up for at least a month on the Today.com site and it is a deliberate thing. They make money by keeping a porn link up. Wow! Would you want to write for a network that pretends to be one thing and is in fact something else where it thinks the sun don’t shine?

Just Another Ordinary Miracle

I love that song. So many of Sarah McLachlan’s songs are beautiful in that simple kind of way. Sometimes I wait for them to put out a ‘best of’ album cause I don’t want to spend the money OR start another collection of any kind of stuff, including CDs or DVDs for music or movies. But, in this case I might see what I can find next time I’m in Zellers. Would be lovely to listen to her at home while I’m writing.

Sarah McLachlan – Ordinary Miracle Lyrics

It’s not that usual when everything is beautiful
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

The sky knows when its time to snow
You don’t need to teach a seed to grow
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Life is like a gift they say
Wrapped up for you everyday
Open up and find a way
To give some of your own

Isn’t it remarkable?
Like every time a raindrop falls
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Birds in winter have their fling
And always make it home by spring
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

When you wake up everyday
Please don’t throw your dreams away
Hold them close to your heart
Cause we are all a part
Of the ordinary miracle

Ordinary miracle
Do you want to see a miracle?

Its seems so exceptional
Things just work out after all
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

The sun comes up and shines so bright
It disappears again at night
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

It’s just another ordinary miracle today
