Gold, Ravens and Jet: My Celtic Sign

I am gold, ravens, black horses and jet… Why am I at the bottom of this list?

Elder (Nov. 25 – Dec. 23)The energy of the Elder sign is wise beyond its years. Your ogham is Ruis, which represents maturity, and is beneficial when you must come to terms with a difficult situation or heal from heavy emotional pain. The Celts linked the badger, the black horse and the raven to the energy of the Elder tree. Your color is gold and your gemstone is jet.

Historically Interesting Casinos in Canada

Canada does not have a long history of actual buildings being made as casinos. We do have gambling far back in our history. John Cabot (circa 1497) noticed the native Canadians used sticks and pebbles to play games of chance.

The Canadian Criminal Code banned every form of gambling in 1892.

However, during  the days of the Klondike Gold Rush (1897 – 1899) Faro was a popular game of chance. By 1900 charities were holding bingo games and raffles. Next came horse racing and by 1925 agricultural fairs and exhibitions were permitted to hold gambling events.

Lotteries began in Canada in 1969. The government amended the Criminal Code to allow themselves to fund special projects from money made through lotteries. In 1974 the Olympics in Montreal were funded with lottery money.

In modern days most provinces have casinos.

Some are still government run, it depends on the province. Canadian casinos can be partially owned by private enterprise, government and the native Canadians who have special rights set out by the government. If you look for casinos in Canada you may find more online casinos than brick and mortar or land-based casinos. Like working from home you don’t actually have to get dressed up (or dressed at all) to play when your casino is online: www.gamingclub.com/nz/online-pokies

history of gambling in Canada

I grew up in the Toronto area where my family and I would attend the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) each summer at least once. My sister’s favourite part of the CNE were the games. Although the midway games had to gear down for children to play, there was a casino for the adults too. I never saw the inside of it. Each year it would be packed up again and disappear until the next summer.

Now I live near the Barrie casino, the Georgian Downs. I see the horse and buggy races now and then. In season you can drive right by on the main highway through Barrie and pass close enough to Georgian Downs to see the horses racing, warming up or exercising.

My plan was to write about historical casinos in Canada but once I started looking for them I found there aren’t any which are very old.

The first commercial casino opened in 1993, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The second to open and credited as the largest casino is in Montreal. It’s called The Montreal Casino and is located in Montreal, Quebec.  Open 24 hours a day, to those who are 18 years of age or older,  since October, 1993.

Plastic Suspension

Don’t feel like posting anything, no drawing either. I have been having trouble at work for awhile and today I was given a 3 day suspension. Not for making trouble or being bitchy on the phone or anything else you are likely to come up with. I’m just not being a smooth operator, using all the right scripty goodness when I handle calls for the tech support.

Anyway, I’ve been a bundle of nerves and upset for weeks now. Tonight I just feel like I’m not crying. If that makes any sense. But, on the bright side I do have two days off. They counted the half day at work as my first day of suspension. I go back on Friday, work Saturday and then have my week of vacation. Funny timing.

I know they don’t want to fire me, I’m very good on the phone. I just don’t seem to have a knack for fitting in all the scripted elements. The plastic stuff that is just what the marketing department tells them we should say. But, that’s life in the modern age. A lot of artificial plastic. Stuff you can’t recycle, can’t even hope to out live and stuff that you can’t even burn without making a big stinky environmentally hazardous mess.

I think I am going to go out to the bookstore. It’s a long bus trek and I don’t know if I will be able to get to sleep very easily tonight but I put off doing it on my day off before cause I was trying not to spend the extra money. Now I just need something to take the edge of my madness. I feel like a puppet who just had all her strings yanked on too hard.

Update: I’m getting back up on the err… dust bunny. I don’t have anything as big as horse. I still have tomorrow off to fluff up my ego and see if I can go back in there and change things. Thank you for all the comments. Thanks for not making me feel like a whining fool. I really appreciate that.

Thursday 13 #11:Long Hair is a Good Thing

The Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen reasons to have long hair…

1. It keeps the back of your neck warm.

2. You can always do a Rapunzel if you’re stuck in a tower or something.

3. It gives you something to do with your hands when you’re stuck waiting for a bus, trying to quit smoking or just want to twirl your hair for no good reason.

4. You’ll seldom be mistaken for a boy/ man.

5. If you get stranded on a deserted island you can always pull out a strand of hair and go fishing.

6. It works to drive your ex-husband crazy (or at least annoyed) long after you have moved on your hair still keeps clogging up his vacuum cleaner.

7. If you’re kind of kinky… you can swat flies with it, just like a horse.

8. If you’re out somewhere fancy and lose a button you only need a needle to sew it back on.

9. You’re saving all that hair from just being stuck in some landfill or other.

10. When you really want to be alone you come equipped with your own curtain to close off the world.

11. It gives school children (those little sweethearts) a place to put their gum.

12. Pile it up on top of your head and you can always claim to have something on your mind.

13. The all you can eat buffet, a few napkins and well placed bobby pins and you’ve got enough for lunch the rest of the week.

Even If You Wanted To…

I know I won’t get back from work in time to make the daily post, not without cheating at least. So I’m posting something now. No good idea what.

I am trying to revamp/ restart the WordGrrls blog. We’ll see how that goes. I think if I am fairly successfully posting each day here I can get back to once a week or so there too. Even if I just make it writing prompts.

No road test today. You have to wait 10 days before you can take it again. Ok with me as I feel like I fell off that horse and am not in a hurry to get back on. Will have to buy a car this coming week or be taking the taxi home from work each night. The bus stops at 12 and I miss the last one by the time my 12:00 shift ends. I was looking at cars on Craigslist and there seem to be pretty good pickings there. Still luck of the draw as far as whatever you get and however safe and reliable it will be. I cringe at the thought of having it fall apart right away and need hefty repairs to get it back on the road again. Still, not much you can do beyond crossing your fingers and having someone else take a look at it.

Going for a sleep now, before work. Got up early to go to the road test place and then found out I couldn’t take the test even if I wanted to.

If you’re in Ontario buy a lottery tick for Friday, or don’t. Give me more opportunity to win and keep it all to myself.
