Buttermilk Syrup

A recipe passed to me from my Mother. Seems like an awful huge amount of sugar but it might be really good. I do like buttermilk!

Ingredients

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup sugar

1 stick butter (1/2 cup)

1 Tablespoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

Combine the sugar, buttermilk, and butter in a saucepan.

Heat and melt the ingredients together over medium heat, stirring regularly. If you do NOT stir then the buttermilk may curdle.

When the mixture starts to bubble and boil around the edges pull it off of the heat and add the vanilla and the baking soda. Stir them together quickly and watch the mixture bubble up and grow.

Pour liberally over your food and ENJOY!

Fluffy Pancakes Recipe

This one turned out nice. I think less baking powder would be a good idea, just a touch less cause it was nice to have fluffy pancakes, but I did taste the baking powder in the batter. Also, I melted the butter in the pan and then poured it into the batter for the recipe. But, it gave me a perfectly greased pan to cook them in without having to add any other oil to the pan.

Fluffy Pancakes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • cooking spray

Directions

  1. Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to “sour”.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into “soured” milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side.

Martha Stewart Not in Canada

Did you know Martha Stewart’s show isn’t on in Canada any more? Why! I really liked her show. She has information about things beyond cooking and pets and such, no one else has all that Martha does.

From Facebook :

Unfortunately, “The Martha Stewart Show” no longer airs in Canada. You can watch full episodes from previous seasons online though: http://www.marthastewart.com/show-archive

Startch on Black Clothing is Not a Good Thing

I know I shouldn’t be wearing black today but it’s what I pulled out from the pile of clothes I should have put away from the laundry this week. I’m about to begin peeling potatoes. If you have done that a few times you know how that statch runs out and gets all over your hands and your shirt, even if you try to be tidy and not wipe your hands on yourself. But, thankfully, we have the washing machine, here and working even now. I try not to take things for granted but when you don’t have something for several months you remember all over again how much you shouldn’t take it for granted.

We are still landscaping. This weekend we are also making dinner for a family get together on Sunday, tomorrow. I don’t mind the cooking and the work, too much. But I do get kind of fed up with being pushed around and having most of my input vetoed, often before I have even finished or hardly begun speaking. Mothers! It must just be a thing with them, a part of never really letting go.

It is funny cause I can still remember years ago (decades of years) when I was in my teens and she began to talk to me as an adult versus a kid. I was so honoured and so self important and felt like I really was a someone. Oh how we have regressed… !

Living with your Mother still has a feeling of not being a good thing. Even if it does help us both out. I do miss having my own place, my own space where things are not randomly and casually moved around. I like finding my toothbrush each morning for instance. That’s another thing you should not take for granted. Sometimes I feel the only way to really keep track of anything is to hoard it all in my bedroom. But it is getting pretty packed in here and I feel trapped with stuff surrounding me. Urrgh.

At least I still have the little things. My nice smelling shampoos which she doesn’t use much, though I leave them out cause I don’t mind if she does. I usually get that tacky shampoo head from using the same shampoo all the time by the time I am halfway through the bottle of shampoo so I’m fine with sharing it. Just lets me have the excuse to buy more, more often.

I have my books too. Though everyone acts like I’ve got a disease when I mention getting a new one. I don’t keep the ones I have read, the fiction ones at least. But, even I admit the pile of nonfiction books is pretty huge and I haven’t read most of them. I do seem to collect them like dust bunnies.

Well, enough babbling. I have to get to potatoes for that potato salad. Party on.

Six Random Facts

Six Random Facts About You Meme

If Lucy tagged me on her way to work that would be quite interesting. How do you blog and drive?

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

1. I am a secret soap opera watcher. I used to watch Another World, until they took it off the air. Now I have been watching All My Children and One Life to Live cause it had some of the actors from Another World. They aren’t still there now though. :(

2. A really good first date for me would be a guy who brings a potted plant, buys me a latte and then talks about something creative and interesting (not too unusual) which he likes to do as a hobby.

3. I have several lottery tickets which I have not checked yet. Some may already be past the time limit. It just spoils it for me to check them. As long as they are unchecked there is a small potential that I could be a millionaire and never have to worry about money again. But, once I check them they are nothing but compost.

4. I don’t like mushrooms. Even the smell of them cooking is gross to me. The rest of my family loves them, of course.

5. I daydream too much. Probably.

6. I have a missing tooth. Luckily it is towards the back and seldom seen.

Lisa Garza

lisagarza

We were away and I missed seeing The Next Food Network Star on Sunday. I’ve been watching it and hoping Lisa Garza would win. She is lovely, gracious and really knows her stuff when it comes to food and cooking. Disappointing to find out she didn’t win. But, there is a rumour that another television network has offered her a show of her own. Maybe it will give her a chance to shine with more of her real skills for crafts and cooking and all her food knowledge as well.

I found two different links to her couture/ designer aprons, both lead back to the same Couture Caviar URL but there isn’t anything up there, yet.

In addition to owning and operating a fine dining restaurant with her husband, Lisa has a couture apron line. “I see myself as a renaissance woman — I can teach the Food Network viewer everything from cooking to crafts to how to set your table and have it look like a $100,000 event.” – From Rachael Ray’s site .
